James "Jim" Andrew Miles

James "Jim" Miles, age 60, of Mitchell, SD passed away surrounded by his family under hospice care. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Monday August 17, 2026 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday, August 16, 2026 at the Will Funeral Chapel. 

James “Jim” Andrew Miles was born to David Miles and Patricia (King) Thorson on December 3, 1965, in Mitchell, South Dakota. Jim was raised in Mitchell, where he attended school and graduated in 1984. Mitchell remained his home throughout his life, a place where he raised his family, built his career, and made countless memories with the people he loved.

During his senior year of high school, Jim met Shawn (Koch) Miles. The two were united in marriage on December 28, 1984, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Together, Jim and Shawn shared 41 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with two sons, Cody and Dillon.

Jim was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work, but some of his proudest years were those spent working alongside his sons. He especially treasured the opportunity to work with Cody at Upper Midwest Garage Door. For Jim, working together was about much more than the job, it was time spent side by side with his boys, something that meant a great deal to him.

Outside of work, Jim enjoyed golfing, hunting, camping, and fishing. Whether he was outdoors, on the golf course, or simply spending time with those closest to him, Jim valued the moments shared with family and friends. One of his wishes was to have just one more round of golf with his sons, a reflection of how much he treasured the time they spent together.

Above all, Jim loved his family. He especially cherished being a grandfather and the time he spent with his four granddaughters, Berkli, Morli, Holly, and Ellie. They brought tremendous joy to his life, and the memories they made together will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Shawn Miles; his sons, Cody (Kelsi) Miles and Dillon (Jill) Miles, all of Mitchell; his four granddaughters, Berkli, Morli, Holly, and Ellie Miles; his parents, David (Marilyn) Miles and Pat Thorson; his brothers, Jeff Miles and Jesse (Amanda) Miles; brother-in-law, Steve (Maureen) Kock; his nieces and nephews, Chris (Sarah) Miles, Becky (Justin) Palmer, Annie Miles, Bennett Miles, Shannen Koch, and Rorey Koch; his great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Larry and Janice Koch, and his brother-in-law, Shane Koch.

Jim will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his devotion to his family, his strong work ethic, and the many years of memories shared with those fortunate enough to know and love him.
