James Joseph Horstman, age 78, of Mitchell, SD passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at The Village at Heritage Oaks in Corsicana, TX under hospice care. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 6:30 PM.
James Joseph Horstman, son of Henry and Loretta (Wieger) Horstman, was born December 13, 1943, in Parkston, SD. He grew up on the family farm near Parkston, SD. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Parkston and graduated from Parkston High School in 1962.
James was united in marriage with Jean Marie Thuringer on July 2, 1966, in Parkston, SD. The couple made their home in Parkston for a short time before moving to Mitchell. He served in the South Dakota Army National Guards and for a short time worked at CO-OP in Ethan. Eventually, he went to work in the parts department at the Chevrolet dealership in Mitchell. He was employed for 30+ years thru various ownership changes until his retirement at the end of 2005. After retirement, he found part-time work at Mitchell Park and Recreation and various auto repair shops around town.
James enjoyed playing cards, NASCAR races, and assisting on his extended families' farms. He also enjoyed travelling with his wife Jean on vacations and going to see his grandchildren in Florida, California, and Texas. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather.
Grateful for having shared his life are his three children: Mark (Starla) Horstman, Kerens TX; Craig (Dawn) Horstman, Riverview FL; Sheri (Joshua) Steig, Corona CA; five grandchildren, Ethan Horstman, Hunter Horstman, Ashley Horstman, Taylor Steig, Kaitlyn Steig; two brothers, Lloyd (Norma) Horstman, Parkston SD; Lynn (Sandy) Horstman, Parkston SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Jean.
