James R. Dodd, 64, Plankinton, SD, died Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Plankinton, SD. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Plankinton, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Prayer service will begin at 7 p.m.
James Dodd, son of Bernard and LaRayne (DeJong) Dodd, was born June 26, 1946 in Rapid City, SD.
Jim grew up and received his education in Plankinton, SD. He attended college at South Dakota State University, Brookings, and Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell.
He was united in marriage with Nancy Brink in August 1967. They resided in Plankinton to raise their three children. Jim remained in Plankinton his entire life and loved the community.
During his life, he worked at Bernard Dodd Implement until 1972, Dodd Hardware Hank in Plankinton until 2000, and continued working at Tonys Building Center in Plankinton until his passing.
Jim was an avid sports fan. He provided years of service to Plankinton High School Sports with coaching, score clock, and announcing games. He was a long time Vikings fan and he loved traveling to his granddaughter, Sydneys, basketball and volleyball games.
Music was a huge part of Jims life. He sang choir in High School, Church, and was Statesman at SDSU. He enjoyed being a part of the Good News band with family and friends as the lead singer.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other family. Jim was at any event he could make it to. He especially loved watching them play sports.
Grateful for having shared his life are his mother, LaRayne Dodd, Mitchell; sister, Lori (Dodd)Fett and husband John, Plankinton; his children, Aaron Dodd (and Fiance, Keri Stilwell),Gayville, SD; Alison (Dodd) Overbay and husband, Tom, Plankinton; and Autumn Dodd (and longtime boyfriend, Alex Picciano),Sheridan, WY; 7 Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Bernard and brother, Ron.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
