Jack Smith, age 75, of Mitchell, SD died Monday September 12, 2011 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital ER. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Jack Smith, son of Wells F. and Bernice L. (Taylor) Smith, was born July 6, 1936 in Boone County, IA. He lived in Iowa for a few years before moving to Mitchell, SD with his family. Jack attended Mitchell Public School until the ninth grade. He started services with Life Quest in 1956. After the passing of his family, Jack lived in foster care with Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Peterson from 1956 to 1993. In 1993, he moved into his own apartment and then later his own house. Jack was employed at Shopko and at the woodshop at LifeQuest. In 1998 Jack made his home at the Cathedral Apartments. Jack was always friendly and kind, and had a smile for everyone he met. He loved taking long walks, shopping, eating out, and attending sporting and musical events, taking pictures and collecting Kernel clothing and memorabilia. Jack attended most of the Mitchell Kernel activities including many State Boys Basketball Tournaments. He was named the Mitchell Booster Club Fan of the Year in 1998. Jack was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church where he served as a greeter, an usher, and an acolyte. If there was any social event at the church, Jack was there! Blessed to have shared his life are Dr. Jack and Jeanne Berry; Shirley Berry; Rich, Deb, Julia, and Jordan Platt; his LifeQuest Family; his church family; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Jerry. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to LifeQuest or the First United Methodist Church. Friends attending Jack's funeral are asked to wear something black and gold to his service.
