Isabella Herman, 84, of Rapid City and Mitchell, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House with her family by her side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, at the Will Funeral Home, Mitchell, SD, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Isabella was born to Sumner (Harvey) and Mary McNary on November 30, 1929, in Mitchell, South Dakota. She grew up in Mitchell and later graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She began her teaching career at age 18 and taught grades K-8 at numerous schools throughout her life. She retired from the Parkston School District at age 62. The joy of teaching and working with children, lead her to continue as a substitute teacher for many years thereafter. She was a member of SDEA, NEA, The Retired Teacher Association, and the First Lutheran Church Ladies Circle. She was a proud breast cancer survivor. Isabella (Belle) married Melvin Herman on December 24, 1949. They lived in Menno, SD, San Pablo, CA,Mitchell, SD and Rapid City, SD where they raised two children. She loved reading, gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Isabella leaves behind her husband of 64 years; two daughters, Susan Hehn and her husband Darold Hehn, of Rapid City, SD, and Sally Bruce and her husband Steven Bruce, of Gillette, WY, four grandchildren; Jessica Jockisch (Hehn) and her husband Thad Jockisch, Joshua Hehn and his fiancé, Mary Jo Reinowski, Scott Bruce, and Spencer Bruce. She is also survived by her brother Duane McNary and sister-in-law Sharon of Las Vegas, NV, brother Jerome McNary and sister-in-law Sharon of Mitchell, SD, sister Jonna Lou Wolf and brother-in-law Carl, of Wisconsin, and numerous nieces and nephews. Isabella was preceded in death by her parents, Sumner (Harvey) and Mary McNary, her step mother, Irene McNary, infant brother Caroll McNary, brothers, Harvey McNary, Robert McNary, John McNary, and sister, Edith Stevens. Isabella was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a wonderful friend to all. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
