Irma E. Murray, age 94 of Mitchell, SD (formerly of Alexandria, SD) died Saturday March 13, 2010 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 20 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, Alexandria, SD with burial at St. Mary of Mercy Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Friday at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD with a prayer service followed by rosary beginning at 6:00 PM.
Irma Murray, daughter of Paul and Anna (Hemmersbach) Schoenfelder, was born August 25, 1915 in Dimock, SD. She attended school at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School.
Irma was united in marriage with Paul Murray on April 26, 1938 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock, SD. The couple farmed nine miles south of Alexandria. Irma spent most of her life farming. She also worked at the Colony of Mercy Retirement Home, south of Alexandria, as a cook at the Rosebud Caf and the Tomahawk Restaurant in Alexandria and owned and operated the Alex Tavern with her husband.
Her husband passed away September 27, 1980. In 1983 she retired and moved into Alexandria. Then in May of 2007, Irma moved to Avera Brady Health and Rehab where she lived until the time of her death
She was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Altar Society in Alexandria for many years. Irma enjoyed spending time gardening, doing embroidery work, quilting and crocheting. She loved to share her quilts and afghans with her family.
Grateful for having shared her life are her seven children, Marjorie Smith, Hewitt, TX, Joyce (Dale) Folsom, Edmonds, WA, Betty (Don) Nebelsick, Abilene, KS, Jackie Stoltz, Alexandria, SD, Mary Jo (Oran) Hoffman, Emery, SD, Janet (Tom) Nebelsick, Alexandria, SD, Pat (Jackie) Murray, Alexandria, SD; 22 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Murray, Mitchell, SD; and five nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, James; a granddaughter, Tracie; a great grandson, Kenny; her parents; two sisters, Helen Olmstead and Elizabeth Schoenfelder; two sons-in-law, Ken Smith and Ron Stoltz; and a special family member, Phillip Carroll.
