Iris L. Sundstrom age 95, of Mitchell died May 6, 2005 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Iris Sundstrom was born August 25, 1909 on a farm south of Artesian, South Dakota to Melvin and Sadie (Goudy) Bunce. She attended rural schools for three years, but upon the death of her father, her family (mother, one sister and two brothers) moved to Artesian. She completed the rest of her grade school education in Artesian and graduated from Artesian High School in 1928. The following year she attended Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell for one year and received her First Grade Teaching Certificate. She taught in several rural schools and later went to Dakota Wesleyan University where she received her State Teaching Certificate. She taught school for a total of thirty three years. On March 5, 1938 she was married to Ernest Sundstrom at Mitchell. They farmed for several years and later bought acreage in Artesian. Her husband passed away in 1981. Several years later Iris moved to Mitchell. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell and belonged to various circles of which she held several offices. She was also a member of the Teacher Retirement System. Iris maintained her own apartment and lived an independent lifestyle until last August when she moved to Firesteel Health Care Center following major surgery. She went to be with the Lord on May 6th after undergoing two major surgeries the previous week. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and one sister. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and close cousins.
