Irene (Schryvers) Vanden Hoek was born on a farm near Stickney, South Dakota on August, 12, 1930 to Jacob and Katherine (Van Ekeren) Schryvers. She moved with her parents to a farm near Corsica at the age of three. Irene attended Walnut Grove Country school and went on to graduate from Corsica High School in 1948. She attended Southern Normal School in Springfield, SD, graduating with a teacher's certificate. She taught in a rural school for one year.

On February 11, 1949 Irene married Lloyd Vanden Hoek. To this union three daughters were born. They farmed in the Corsica area until 1986 when they retired and moved into Corsica. Irene worked at the Corsica Livestock Sale Barn for over 35 years and was a member of the Corsica Ambulance Association from 1985 to 2007.

Irene was baptized, made profession of faith and was a faithful member of the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica, where she was active in the women's groups of the church. In 2007, Lloyd and Irene moved to Mitchell to be closer to family. They transferred their membership to the First Reformed Church and Irene continued to be active in Hannah Circle until health reason forced her to give that up.
