Irene Vanden Hoek, 93, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab surround by her family. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at First Reformed Church in Mitchell; visitation will begin one hour prior. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Corsica, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorial for the Corsica and Harrison County Cemeteries and the Corsica Ambulance Service would be preferred.
Irene (Schryvers) Vanden Hoek was born on a farm near Stickney, South Dakota on August, 12, 1930 to Jacob and Katherine (Van Ekeren) Schryvers. She moved with her parents to a farm near Corsica at the age of three. Irene attended Walnut Grove Country school and went on to graduate from Corsica High School in 1948. She attended Southern Normal School in Springfield, SD, graduating with a teacher's certificate. She taught in a rural school for one year.
On February 11, 1949 Irene married Lloyd Vanden Hoek. To this union three daughters were born. They farmed in the Corsica area until 1986 when they retired and moved into Corsica. Irene worked at the Corsica Livestock Sale Barn for over 35 years and was a member of the Corsica Ambulance Association from 1985 to 2007.
Irene was baptized, made profession of faith and was a faithful member of the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica, where she was active in the women's groups of the church. In 2007, Lloyd and Irene moved to Mitchell to be closer to family. They transferred their membership to the First Reformed Church and Irene continued to be active in Hannah Circle until health reason forced her to give that up. Irene was also active in the Countryside Bible group led by Pastor Brown on Zion Lutheran Church.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband in 2014, her sister, Loretta Van Genderen, sisters' in-law, Lois Vanden Hoek and Arla Ver Steeg and son in-law, Gary Plagmann.
Irene is survived by her daughters; Sheryl Plagmann of Mitchell, Marcia Taylor of Sioux Falls, and Laura (Jack) Docken of Mitchell, granddaughters; Heather Mergen (Mike Kane) of Sioux Falls, Katy (Ryan) Stulc of Rapid City, Leah Taylor (Alexander Forozan) of Houston, TX, and Cindy (Barry) Geiman of Plankinton, great grandsons; Aiden Mergen of Sioux Falls, Cyrus Forozan of Houston, TX, and great granddaughter, Willa Forozan of Houston, TX, brother in-law, Delmar Van Genderen of Corsica and Don (Janelle Ver Steeg of Alamo, TX, as well as many nieces and nephews.
