Obituary

Howard Leslie Herrick was born March 30, 1919 to Roy and Alta Herrick in Dayton, Iowa. He graduated from White Lake High School and Dakota Wesleyan University. He served in the US Army as a surveyor during WW II and was in Italy when the war ended. On December 9, 1943, he married Josephine Brumbaugh in Creedmoor, North Carolina. He was a farmer, elementary teacher in rural Aurora County, Wood, Farmer, Bonesteel, Parkston and Wessington Springs, and served as a custodian at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. He retired in 1981 and moved back to the farm south of White Lake. He had many interests including drawing/painting, photography, rocks and fossils, history, gardening, keeping journals, music and animals. He was a member of the Aurora County Historical Society, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star Starlight Chapter #41, American Legion and the Dunlap Methodist Church Association. He helped to construct a monument marking the landing of the Stratosphere balloon in the 1930s south of White Lake. Survivors include five children: Donna and Arthur Georgopoulos, of Battle Creek, Iowa; Judy and John Magstadt of ONeill, Nebraska; Robert and Sharon Herrick of Emery; Frances (Tink) and Larry Sharp of Fullerton, Nebraska; and Tom and Cindy Herrick of Anthon, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, a sister-in-law, Irene Blair, of Yachats, Oregon, and some loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine in 1991, his parents, brothers, A. Harold Herrick and Lawrence Herrick, a sister, Marien Noble.
