Hilda Hanson, age 85, of Mitchell, died September 16, 2007 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Memorial services will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 PM with visitation from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at a later date. Hilda was born August 12, 1922 in Bochum, Germany to Max and Karoline (Prange) Sperling. Hilda came to the United States at the age of 11 months with her mother. She attended country school in rural Platte. Hilda married Nels Meistad on November 28, 1938 in Mitchell, SD. The couple made their home on a farm north of Mitchell. Hilda was active on the farm and in later years owned and operated several restaurants. Hilda enjoyed crocheting, baking, cooking, and gardening. She was known for making her famous cupcakes, chicken and noodles, German dumplings, caramel rolls and bread. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by five children: Gene (Barbara) Meistad, Sun City, California, Trudi (Harold Jr.) Lantz, Pukwana, South Dakota, Dorothy Camp, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Diane (Sid) Strange, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Joyce Bricker, Ethan, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one sister Esther Renken, one nephew and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Larry (Butch) Meistad and son-in-law Jerry Bricker. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or El Riad Shrine Transportation.
