Obituary

Herbert James Yost, son of Nicholas and Kathryn (Arens) Yost, was born on April 15, 1930 in Farmer, SD. He attended grade school at St Peter's Catholic Church and High School at Edgerton Consolidated High School both in Farmer, SD. He graduated High School in 1948. He was united in marriage to Sharon L. Bessel on November 21, 1956, in Marion, SD. They made their home in Mitchell, SD, Wolsey, SD, Chamberlain, SD, and spent the last 53 years in Avon, SD. They were blessed with seven children.

Herb was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, in Dante, SD. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran.  He could be described as spunky, mischievous and quite the jokester. He especially enjoyed having coffee with the guys at the Avon Locker, spending time with his dog Mitsy, making sure his yard was perfect (everyone stay off!), his cars were immaculate and his American and Navy flags were always waving!  Most of all he loved to fish and hunt and he passed the love of the outdoors to his family. He spent many years in construction and helped build the Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown, SD. He was in the Navy from 1950-1954 and spent two years serving on LST 802 (Landing Ship – Tank) during the Korean War. He served in the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and received many medals and decorations. He was a proud member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and American Legion for 53 years with Post #150 in Avon, SD. He worked for Northwestern Public Service for 33 years retiring in 1995 as Town Superintendent. Herb was a modern day "MacGyver", he believed spare parts from anything could fix everything.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by seven children: Michael (Leda) Yost of Redfield, SD, Michele (Scott) Knickman of Sikeston, MO, Mark Yost of Sioux Falls, SD, Marvin (Kris) Yost, of  Chesterfield Township, MI, Monica VonSeggern, of Elk Point, SD, Melonie (Jeff) Juffer, of Wagner, SD, Martin (Stephanie) Yost of Sturgis, SD, 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one sister Veronica (Don) Hix, of Rapid City, SD, sister in law LaVerne Yost of Salem, SD, many nieces and nephews, his special friend Agnes Winckler of Avon, SD and all of his amazing neighbors.

Herb was preceded in death by his loving wife Sharon (Bessel) Yost of 59 years, his parents Nicholas and Kathryn (Arens) Yost, brother Lorrin (Sonny) Yost, sister Sr. Miriam Terese Yost OSF, in laws Ben and Jessie Bessel and Barney and Geneva Hauck.
