Obituary

Helen C. Matya, 99, of Mitchell, SD died Monday, December 13, 2021 at Avera Brady Heath and Rehab. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday, December 20, 2021 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service followed by a rosary beginning at 5:00 PM.

Helen C. Matya, daughter of Frank and Marie (Korger) Gable, was born December 7, 1922 in Shelby, NE. She grew up in Shelby and received her education there, graduating from Shelby High School. After her schooling, Helen was employed at Swift & Co in the Creamery Department candling eggs.

Helen was united in marriage with Ted A. Matya on September 24, 1946 in Shelby, NE. Ted was employed with power plants. The couple made their home in Richland NE and later in Columbus, NE. In 1957 the couple moved to Pickstown, SD and later in 1969 to The Dalles, OR and later moving to Sweet Home, OR. In 1986 they made their home in Mitchell, SD to be closer to family.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross stiching, reading, playing cards and games and watching sports. Helen truly enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.

Helen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pickstown.

Grateful for having shared her life are her four daughters, Linda (Lynn) Hansen, Sioux Falls, SD, Kathleen (Bill) Austerman, Artesian, SD, Colleen (Ken) Duncan, Oro Valley, AZ, Deborah Matya, Portland, OR; five grandchildren, Cory (Margaret) Hansen, Cindy Hansen, Ted (Amanda) Austerman, Phillip (Rachael) Austerman, Vincent (Stephanie) Austerman; six great grandchildren, Luke, Callie, Brady, Owen, Tess and Emmett Austerman; three sisters, Evelyn Morgan, Kimball, NE, Irene Smith, Columbus, NE, Betty Watts, Papillion, NE; a sister-in-law, Luella Gable, Shelby, NE and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Matya on November 2, 2015; her parents; and her siblings, Agnes, Norma Jean, Edward and Donald.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
