Helen Jerke, age 85, of Mitchell, died February 10, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls where she had been a resident since August, 2003. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell at 1:30 PM on Monday, February 14. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery at Tripp. Helen Christine (Schmidt) Jerke was born on January 18, 1920, in Tripp, SD to Gottlieb and Theresa (Lehr) Schmidt. She grew up in rural Tripp and attended school through the eighth grade. Helen married Arthur Richard (Dick) Jerke on June 29, 1947, in Tripp, SD. They moved to Mitchell in July of 1953. She worked at Randall Foods from 1970-1992 in the cafeteria as a baker and was especially known for her pies and rolls. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Lydia Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, fishing, and gardening. Her two special puppies, Tiffi and Sheba, brought joy to her the last eight years of her life. She is survived by her husband Dick; a son, John and wife, Melinda of Mitchell; two daughters, Lyla Jerke, of Mitchell and Judy Ehlers and husband Mike of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Paul and Amy Jerke of Mitchell and one step grandchild, Jessica Ehlers, of Sioux City; one brother Albert Schmidt and wife, Ella of Tripp and a brother-in-law, Edmund Jerke and wife, Hilde, of Mitchell and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Calvin. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested.
