Obituary

Harold L. Underhill, age 91, of Redfield, SD (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died Saturday October 15, 2005 at the Redfield Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at First United Methodist Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with Masonic Rites beginning at 7:00 PM Monday. Harold L. Underhill, son of Ross and Lottie (Tenny) Underhill, was born February 7, 1914 in Mitchell, SD. He attended the public schools in Mitchell and graduated in 1932. Harold was united in marriage with Ruth E. Crane of Chamberlain, SD on March of 1934. To this union was born three children, Ronald E. Underhill, Vicki Lynn Donovan and Lori Jean Deibert. Harold worked part time at the Mitchell Gamble Store Until June of 1936 when he was employed full time at the new Gambles warehouse. This warehouse was established to service the Mitchell store and surrounding Gamble Dealer Stores in a 75 mile radius. In 1939 Gambles consolidated their warehouses and Harold was transferred to the Mitchell Gamble store as a sales clerk. In 1940 he was promoted to assistant manager. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and became a pilot. During which time he was fortunate to have participated in the construction of the infamous Spruce Goose, a Howard Hughes airplane. He returned from his service in the Air Corp in December of 1945. He and his wife moved to Sioux Falls where he was employed by Gambles regional outside sales supervisor. He established and supervised the first outside sales program for his region. In 1948, Harold moved to Marshall, MN to manage the large Gambles Store there. In 1950 he moved to Mitchell, SD as manager of the Mitchell Gamble Store. In 1952 he transferred to the wholesale division as a dealer store Zone Superintendent. In 1976 he was appointed Operating Manager of Gambles for South Dakota, the western half of Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas. In 1978, after 42 years with Gambles, he retired. He was a charter member and an officer of the Mitchell Civil Air Patrol Squadron and later served as squadron commander. His wife of 36 years, Ruth, passed away in 1970 and in July of 1977 he was united in marriage with Geneva M. Couch of Yankton, SD. They moved to Yankton, they later moved from Yankton to Redfield where they made their home until Genevas death in 2004. Harold joined his children in Spearfish, SD until poor health forced his return to the Eastern Star Home in Redfield where he resided until his death. He was a Past Master of Saint Andrews Lodge, A.F.&A.M. of Yankton, he was a past 32nd Degree Mason and a past member of Yankton Valley Consistory as well as the El Riad Shrine. He had belonged to the Eastern Star for 32 years and was a Past Patron of both the Mitchell and Yankton Chapters. Harold has also belonged to the Elks Lodge for 35 years before demitting, and was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. Harold appreciated the Big Band sound, Lawrence Welks champagne music, playing the drums and a good dance. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Grateful for having shared his life are his two children, Ronald Underhill, Spearfish, SD, Lori Jean Deibert and her husband, Randy, Spearfish, SD; a son-in-law, Clair Donovan, Spearfish, SD; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and his best friend Evelyn Brand, Redfield, SD. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Ruth in 1970; his sister, Doris in 1970; his daughter, Vicki Donovan in 2003; and his 2nd wife Geneva in 2004.
