Obituary

H. Dean Bowman age 78, of rural Mitchell died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Mitchell Congregational United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Harold Dean Bowman, son of Harold L. and Isabelle R. (Woodraska) Bowman, was born May 7, 1936 at their rural Fulton, SD home. Dean's schooling began at a rural one-room school and was completed at Plano Consolidated School, graduating in 1954. Dean was united in marriage with Shirley C. Morrison on November 15, 1959 in Mitchell, SD. They lived three years in Geneva, IL where he was employed by AT&T, before returning to Mitchell, SD. In 1965 a move to rural Mitchell, began his and his family's farming occupation. He was also employed by Langenfeld Ice Cream Co., Sunshine Food Stores and Owatonna Manufacturing. Attending Prairie Village's Fall Thrashing Bee and the South Dakota State Fair were family favorites. In retirement years, restoring antique tractors and participating in parades was an enjoyment for him. He enjoyed collecting a variety of antiques. Dean had a love of music and dancing. He played the piano and was taking guitar lessons. Two of his favorite songs were "In The Mood" and "Great Balls of Fire". He was a member of the Mitchell Congregational United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. Dean was also a past member of the South Dakota National Guard. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Shirley Bowman, Mitchell, SD; five children, Alan D. (Carol) Bowman, Minneapolis, MN, Kevin L. (Edane) Bowman, Brandon, SD, Linda Sue B. (Darin) Weidenbach, Mitchell, SD, Neil J. Bowman, Mitchell, SD, Darla C. Thompson, Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren, Tonner and Gaven Bowman, Ashton and Tessa Weidenbach, Nick, Nathan and Noah Bowman, Danielle (Greg) Beynon and Kendric Thompson; two great grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Sharon) Bowman, Fedora, SD; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to Prairie Village, Madison, SD; or the Mitchell Congregational United Church of Christ.
