Harold Abeln, 84, of Mitchell, died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice Center in Sioux Falls of complications from a stroke. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 Pm Tuesday, August 23 at Will Funeral Chapel with the memorial service beginning at 7:30 PM. Harold donated his body to the University of South Dakota Medical School so there will be no viewing with burial at a later date. He was born on November 2nd 1926 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Marcus and Irene Abeln. He worked as an auto body Technician/Painter and in retirement at County Fair Grocery. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Dolores Kousman on October 20th 1947. He is survived by his wife Delores and six children: Mike (Diane) Abeln of Coon Rapids, MN, Jerry (Emajoe), Abeln of Memphis, TN, Dave (Kathy) Abeln Ft. Pierre, SD, Nancy (Greg) Haggerty Dell Rapids, SD, Doug (Debbie) Abeln of Sioux Falls, SD, Steve (Julie) Abeln of Anchorage, AK; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; brother Clarence and sister Irene. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be given to Avera Dougherty Hospice House or the Holy Spirit Parish in Harold's name.
