Harlan Leroy Smith, age 70 of Mitchell, SD passed on January 16, 2018, at Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from medical complications. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial and military rites at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM Monday.
Harlan Smith, son of Leroy and Minnie (Deinert) Smith, was born on June 28, 1947, in Mitchell, SD. He attended Lisbon Township Country School, and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1965. He served a four-year tour in the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic where he was stationed in Arizona, Illinois, and Alaska. After his military service, Harlan attended Mitchell Vo-Tech where he studied electronics. He married Marilyn Anderson on August 18, 1973 in Webster, SD, and the couple raised three children together. Harlan took over his father's farm raising cattle, hogs and sheep. Harlan enjoyed spending time with his cats and dogs as well as designing and building things in his shop with his sons. He was witty and enjoyed friendly banter with his friends. In the past two years he has enjoyed giving farm fresh eggs to friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Minnie Smith, sister, Harriet Hemeyer, brother Harley Smith, brother-in-law Duane Strong, son Jerome Smith, two infant sons and his father-in-law.
Harlan is survived by his wife Marilyn Smith, sister Helen Strong, brother Harvey Smith, daughter Janel Hays, (husband Michael) of Cheyenne, Wyo., son Jay Smith, brother-in-law Delmer Hemeyer, mother-in-law Beverly Anderson and several nieces and nephews.
