Obituary

Grace Cunningham age 104, passed away Thursday, May 28, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, June 1, 2015 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Grace Field Cunningham was born July 19, 1910, in Mitchell, SD, achieving the age of 104 years, 10 months and 9 days. Grace cherished her youth growing up on the family farm near the James River. She and her sister, Florence, loved the farm and often shared stories like being ferried to school in the family boat in the spring when the river would flood. She attended Roosevelt Country School and Litchfield Elementary school, graduating 8th grade. She spent her later teen years as a "mother's helper" for several area families where she honed her skills as an excellent cook and baker. Grace married Clarence Cunningham on April 30, 1933. Their two children, Glenn and Delores, were born in 1934 and 1935. Grace was an excellent homemaker and mother. She worked side by side with her husband in various businesses in Mitchell. One of her achievements of which she was proudest was their purchase of a home on East Ninth Avenue in 1945, where she lived for 69 years until entering Firesteel Healthcare Center in 2014. After Clarence's death in 1971, Grace lived alone for the remainder of her life and filled her days with caring for her two grandchildren, traveling frequently to Glenn's in Oklahoma for extended visits, canning and cooking, and her greatest passion, quilting. Grace crafted countless quilts in her life and gave them as gifts to friends and family. Her quilts have found homes around the world and are treasured by many. In her later life, as her eyesight failed, she enjoyed music by Guy Lombardo, Lawrence Welk, the original Grand Ol' Opry, and listening to KORN radio. She attended the Church of the Nazarene. The span of Grace's life was the span of a century. In her memory was the arrival of motorized cars, the development of flight, two world wars, the Great Depression, the space program and the Internet. Her son's travels gave her a view of the world, and her daughter's home in Mitchell gave her a daily connection to family. Grace is survived by her two children, son Glenn and wife Norma Cunningham; daughter Delores and husband Ivan Brookbank; granddaughter Julie Brookbank and husband, Philip Picha, all of Mitchell; grandson Doug and wife Teresa Brookbank of Simpsonville, SC; great-grandson, JD Brookbank, of Charleston, SC; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Brookbank of Mitchell, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Florence Field, her parents, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
