Gladys Elma Van Overschelde, age 90, of Mitchell died Friday, May 21, 2004 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church with a wake service followed by a rosary beginning at 7:00 PM Monday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Gladys Elma Phelps, daughter of Ernest Ray and Goldie (Stanton) Phelps was born February 12, 1914 at Royal, IA. She grew up and attended school in Royal, IA and later moved with her family to rural Mitchell, SD. Gladys attended Jefferson Country School. Gladys was united in marriage with Joseph Van Overschelde on February 10, 1931 in Letcher, SD. The couple farmed in the Letcher, SD area. Gladys helped on the farm and also raised chickens. In 1963 the couple moved into Mitchell, SD. While in Mitchell, Gladys worked in the Dietary and Laundry Department at St. Joseph Hospital from 1963 to 1970. She later worked at Firesteel Healthcare Center from 1971 to 1984. Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Rita Gates and husband, Gene, Pierre, SD, Ann Van Overschelde, Huron, SD; three sons, Richard Van Overschelde and his wife, Glenda, Huron, SD, Leo Van Overschelde and his wife, Donna, Mitchell, SD, Ray Van Overschelde and his wife, Pam, Mitchell, SD; a daughter-in-law, Peg Van Overschelde; 20 grandchildren; 26 great grand children; a brother, Harold Phelps and his wife, Eleanor, Royal, IA; three sisters, Alice Niccum, Tonka Bay, MN, Lois Collette, Long Beach, CA, Edna Mae Hunter and her husband, Vern, Inver Groves Heights, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sr. in 1982; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Lewis in infancy; one granddaughter, Lunette; her parents; a sister, Lucille Johnson; four brothers, Walter, Loren, Kenneth and Ray; daughter-in-law, Iona Van Overschelde.
