Gladys Schrank, age 93, of Mitchell, died January 5, 2007 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 8, at First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 7-9 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Gladys was born on her parents farm south of Mt. Vernon on December 31, 1913, to Henderson and Amelia (Lange) May. She married Walter Metzger on November 24, 1931. They farmed south of Mt. Vernon until 1956. They operated a caf in Mt. Vernon for several years. She then worked at the Methodist Hospital in the nursery for nearly seven years. Walter died August 18, 1962, and she then moved to Mitchell. Gladys married Clarence Schrank on March 20, 1969. They farmed for several years and then moved to Mt. Vernon. On Feb. 1, 1981, they moved to Mitchell to manage the Cathedral Squares Apartments. Clarence died November 25, 1987, and she continued to manage the apartment complex until retiring in 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Iola Digerness and her husband, Glen, of Mitchell; two grandchildren: Jeff Digerness and wife Kathy, of Alexandria, and Susan Schroeder, of Mitchell, three great grandchildren, Kim Metzger and husband, Nathan, of Dubuque, Iowa, and Matthew Schroeder and wife, Elizabeth, and Eric Schroeder all of Alexandria; one great great grandson, Jonah Metzger; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Esther Rechtenbaugh; brothers, Ben and Hans May and both husbands.
