Gladys C. Konechne, age 101, of Mitchell, formerly of Mt. Vernon, died May 10, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a 7 PM prayer service. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Gladys was born on March 15, 1904 at Mitchell, SD to Frank and Sophia (Rubley) Sayles. She grew up in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University and received her teaching certificate. She taught in country schools near Kimball, SD. Gladys married John D. Konechne on June 9, 1925 at Mitchell and the couple lived on a farm southwest of Kimball. In 1943, the family moved to a farm south of Mt. Vernon and in 1955, they moved into Mt. Vernon. In the fall of 1989, they moved to Mitchell and made their home at Meadowlawn Plaza. She is survived by her children: Elaine Dempsey and husband, Don, Boulder City, Nevada and E. Wayne (Carolyn) Konechne, Ames, Iowa; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Frances Holly, Pearce, Arizona and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Sayles of Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband on May 8, 1990, a brother, Lloyd Sayles, an infant brother, Frank Jr, and her parents.
