Gertrude Sayles, age 100 of Mitchell, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Firesteel Healtcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday April 3, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell with burial at the Servicemans Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Gertrude A. Sayles was born October 27, 1908 on a farm near Presho, SD to William and Elizabeth (King) Allyn. She attended elementary school on the farm, high school in Presho, and Dakota Weslyan University attaining a teacher certificate in 1929. Gertrude married Lloyd Sayles on August 10, 1929. They lived in Mitchell the rest of their lives.
Gertrude was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Serving at one time as an elder.
Gertrude and Lloyd had six children: Bradley A. Sayles and wife Yuko, Hopewell, VA; Beverly J. Stopfer and husband Glyn, Mission, TX; Donna K. Kluth, Mitchell, SD; Richard F. Sayles and wife Vi, Mitchell, SD; Carolyn A. Metzger is deceased; Sue M. Coler and husband Shannon, Billings, MT. The Sayles had 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Gertrude died March 29, 2009 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, daughter Carolyn, and two grandsons.
