George Schmit, age 89, of Mitchell, SD died Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Firesteel Healthcare Center surrounded by family.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at the Church of Epiphany Cemetery in Epiphany, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service and rosary beginning at 7:00 PM.

George William Schmit was born February 24, 1928 in rural Sanborn County, SD on "the farm" north of Artesian, SD to Michael and Lousia (Kersch) Schmit. George graduated for Artesian High School in 1947.

He was drafted in the US Army in April 1951, trained at Fort Hood, TX, honorable discharged in 1952, and then transferred to the reserves from 1952 to 1956.

George married LaVonne Brutty on September 5, 1951 in the Church of Epiphany in Epiphany, SD. They farmed near Artesian until they moved to Mitchell in 1971. He also worked at Ross Laboratories starting in 1969, which then became, 3M and finally retired from Toshiba 1993.

George enjoyed going to auctions and spending time at the sale barns. He and LaVonne made almost daily drives to "the farm" to mend fences and clean up branches right up until he was admitted to Firesteel in August.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife LaVonne of Mitchell, SD; two sons Douglas (Roxy) Schmit of Spearfish, SD and Gregory (Dixie) Schmit of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Angeline Eining, Agatha Ebersdorfer, Raymond Schmit, Martha Stratman and infant Michael Schmit.
