George Kayser, age 82 of Alexandria, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Salem. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 13, 2009 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria with burial at St. Mary of Mercy Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the church with prayer service beginning at 7:30 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
George was born on March 25, 1926 in Emery, SD to Felix and Sophia (Krier) Kayser. He grew up in Emery and attended St. Martins grade school. George then received an honorary high school degree from Hanson High School. In 1943 he moved with his family to the Alexandria area before being drafted into the army. He was enlisted for two years and served in Italy. When he returned home, he farmed with his brother Louis until his failing health. He then moved into his new home in Alexandria. He met and married Gloria Lippert on June 17, 1994. They continued to live there until her death on July 7, 1997. The couple enjoyed traveling and these were Georges happiest years of his life. George spent his last 11 years in Salem at the nursing home. George developed his own personal ministry to his fellow residents. He was a lifetime American Legion member, a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, and the National Farmers Organization.
He is survived by 3 step-children: Debra and husband Dave Schmidt, Tripp, SD; Cheryl Lippert and husband Dan Button, Fort Meyers, FL, Susan Lippert and husband Charles Hubbard, Fargo, ND; 6 brothers and sisters: Sister Verna Kayser, Order of Saint Francis, Milwaukee, WI, Geraldine Thill, Salem, SD; Bernie (Carole) Kayser, Alexandria, SD, Fr. Leonard Kayser, Yankton, SD, Rose Mary (Linus) Boehmer, Pierre, SD and Francis Fabian, Rosemount, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria, parents, 2 sisters Verna Gaspar and Rita Mowry and a brother Louis.
