Obituary

Genevieve Gannon, age 100, of Homer, LA (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died Wednesday May 28, 2008 at Christus Schumpert Highland Hospital in Shreveport, LA. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial at St. Peters Cemetery in Farmer, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Genevieve Scherer was born to A.J. (Adam) Scherer and Catherine (Schuren) Scherer on January 14, 1908 in St. Joseph, MO. The family moved to Epiphany, SD and settled on a farm. Genevieve attended country school and completed her formal education at the Catholic School in Epiphany. She was united in marriage with Leslie Gannon on October 14, 1927 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple worked on farms in Hanson County. They later settled on their own farm three miles north of Farmer, SD where they raised their family. Genevieve lived on the farm for 50 years prior to moving to Mitchell because of her health. Genevieve was active in St. Peters Catholic Church in Farmer, a member of the extension club, and the 4-H at Farmer and Mitchell. She was always active and volunteered her services at Firesteel Healthcare Center until she was well into her 80s. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Velma Bachleitner and her husband, Jerry, Magnolia, Ark.; her son-in-law, Loren Paulsen, Flandreau, SD; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a sister, Mardella Birgen, Alcester, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Gannon in 1966; her daughter, Lucille Paulsen; her parents; five sisters and four brothers.
