Gelene L. Coates, age 93, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Firesteel Heathcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Gelene Lucille Coates, daughter of Harry and Bertie (Olafson) Johnson, was born December 21, 1918 in Geddes, SD. She attended various schools, later graduating from Geddes High School in 1939. Gelene was united in marriage with Gailen Coates on January 23, 1943 in Kansas City, MO. She worked at Jarold Shop, Lake View Drive-in, Clark Radio, and Red Top Cab. In 1958 the couple started an electrical contracting business, known as Gailen L. Coates Electric. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Gelene enjoyed bowling, golf, ballroom dancing, cards and cooking. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Gailen Coates, Mitchell, SD; a sister, Donna (Gene) Farris, Mitchell, SD; two brothers, Lawrence Johnson, Mitchell, SD, Delmar (Mary Beth) Johnson, Sioux City, IA; a brother-in-law, Keith (Charlotte) Coates, Rapid City, SD; a sister-in-law, Lila (Ray) Thorp, Sioux City, IA; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret Mahaney and Harriet Burnham; and a brother, Willis Johnson. Memorials may be directed to LifeQuest or First Lutheran Church in Mitchell.
