Obituary

Gary Laverne Phillips, age 64, of Mitchell, died Monday August 27, 2007 at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 PM until time of service. Burial will be Thursday morning at 11:00 AM at Graceland Cemetery. Gary was born August 17, 1943 in Mitchell to Laverne and Norma (Barnes) Phillips. He attended Mitchell public schools. He was then drafted into the Army on April 1, 1965 and fought in the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1967. He worked in the family business, Phillips Roofing, for many years before moving to Modesto, CA. While in Modesto, he earned his GED and attended Modesto Community College. He then married Rochelle McCafferty in April, 1971. Gary was a dedicated Boy Scout Leader participating in numerous trips and events with his boys. He always enjoyed outdoor activities, like camping, fishing, and canoeing. Gary was also interested in Native American history and antiques He is survived by two sons, Aaron and wife Christina of Kansas City, MO and Jamie and his wife Holly of Kansas City, MO; three brothers, David and wife Cheryl Phillips of Mitchell, Larry and wife Karla of Mitchell, and Scotty Phillips of Letcher; three sisters, Maureen and husband Lloyd Kunkel of Mitchell, Vicki Phillips and husband Junior C. Sonne of Mitchell and Leslie (Puddy) and husband Dan Barber of Omaha; three grandchildren Miranda Landis, Chelsea Phillips and Robbie Phillips. He was preceded in death by his Parents and one nephew, Terry Larson.
