Frank Raymond Ray Munson, 84, of Mitchell, formerly of Winner, died Christmas Day, December 25, at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 30th at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Winner. Burial will be at the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will be held in Winner at the Mason Funeral Home on Friday, December 29th from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Ray was born February 11, 1922 in Long Pine, NE to Frank and Lois (White) Munson. In 1933, his mother was remarried to Elmer Hewett. When he was 16, the family moved to Winner, SD where he graduated in 1940. Upon graduation, he attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell until enlisting in the Army. He served a year in combat in France and Germany with a heavy mortar battalion. After receiving his discharge in 1945, he returned to Winner where he managed the Hewett Oil Co. On March 22, 1947, he married Lilly Hampson at Ideal, SD. In 1952 he became owner-operator of Munson Oil Co. and also ran the local Munson DX Service station. After the sale of the business in 1968, the family moved to California where he joined his father in the manufacturing of oil and gasoline tankers. After retiring in 1982, he moved back to Winner. On December 29, 1989, he married Alice (Lynass) Lentz. He served for a number of years on the Winner City Council and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He excelled in sports playing football and basketball throughout high school, along with brother James. He played minor league baseball for the Winner Pheasants. As a young man Ray also enjoyed flying. After only four hours of flight school, he set a record for flying solo and was quite the daredevil. He was an avid outdoorsman spending endless hours fishing at his cabin at Pine Creek that he shared with his lifelong friend Merle Schwinler. He also enjoyed golfing, pheasant hunting, and spending time with his family and friends and in his last year enjoyed entertaining his great granddaughters. He is survived by his son, Rick (Melodee) of Lodi, CA, a daughter, Linda Kahler, of Mitchell, two stepdaughters, Karyl (Kenny) Kauer of Winner, and Karen Mouw of Lincoln, NE; nine grandchildren, Josh, Emily, Andrew, and Greg Munson, Michelle (Ken) Payne, Abby Kahler, Keith and Kourtney Kauer, and Casey Mouw; four great granddaughters, Bailey and Kennedy Kahler and Kirbie and Whitney Payne; two brothers, James (Nancy) Munson, Falmouth, MA, and Jim (Mary) Hewitt, of Littleton, CO, and his many cherished nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two close cousins, Sid White and friend Myrna, of Lincoln, NE and Lorene Kernan, of Long Pine, NE, as well as his dear friend, Helen Uken, of Parker, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, both his wives, 3 brothers, Vern, Bill, and Elmer Floyd Hewett, his close cousin, Fred Kernan, and his stepson, Greg Lentz.
