Obituary

Frank D. Durst, age 84 of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, March 8, 2019 at the Will Funeral Chapel with Reverend John Hansen officiating. Burial and military rites at the American Legion Cemetery, Mitchell, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the Will Funeral Chapel.

Frank Durst, son of Harry and Alice (Lang) Durst Sr., was born April 20, 1934 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up and attended Mitchell Public School. While in school, he was active in track and basketball. As a young man he worked for area farmers in the summer time. Frank joined the rodeo circuit, taking part in many rodeos.  In March of 1952, Frank joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War. He was stationed at Midway Island. Frank was honorably discharged in September of 1954.

Frank was united in marriage with June Jorgensen on October 9, 1952 in Compton, CA. The couple returned to Mitchell in September of 1954. He was employed at Inter City Bus Lines (as a mechanic and bus driver), Verschoor's Western Chevrolet; Mitchell Body Shop. Frank began his 25 year career with the Mitchell Fire Department in August of 1958. He served as Assistant Fire Chief for 14 years and acting Fire Chief for a few years. After his retirement he worked for Dakota Pork as a boiler and maintenance man for 10 years.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and passed his love for the outdoors down to his children and grandchildren. Frank was an honorary fire fighter, member of the American Legion and the Degree of Honor.

Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, Franklin "Gary" (Randi) Durst, Rapid City, SD, Larry (Pam) Durst, Petersburg, AK, Cindy (Greg) Sheesley, Mitchell, SD, Terry Durst, Sioux Falls, SD, Linda Osterman, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Durst, Sioux Falls, SD, Donald Durst, Douglas, WY; special friend, Virginia Tegethoff.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June S. Durst in October of 2000; a grandson, Dustin Durst; four brothers, Harry Durst Jr., Ralph Durst, Robert Durst and Wilbur Durst; three sisters, Mauren Wagner, Dorothy Swenson, and Ruth Toland.
