Obituary

Florence Uhre, age 92, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, February 14, 2014 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday February 19, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church (39602 243rd St, Rural Letcher, SD) with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Florence Uhre, daughter of Herman and Ellen (Leponiemi) Ahlstrand, was born September 8, 1921 in Virginia, MN. On October 3, 1928, Florence and her brother, Walter were adopted by Marie (Nelson) and Halver Boe of Elliott Township, Sanborn County. Florence's eldest sibling, Mildred was raised by a Great Aunt in Duluth, MN. Younger sister Eileen was adopted by a family in St. Paul, MN. Baby sister Elsie was adopted by a family in Cincinnati, OH. Eventually the four sisters were reunited and remained in contact for their remaining years. On July 28, 1935 Florence was confirmed at Storla Lutheran. She attended Leet School in Elliot Township and graduated from Letcher High School in 1939. Florence obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern State College, Aberdeen in June 1949. On April 25, 1949 Florence was united in marriage to Martin S. Uhre at the Storla Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. O.M. Knudson. Maurine and Bernard Uhre were their witnesses and Florence then joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Florence and Martin were parents to three daughters, Naomi, Ruth and Lois. Florence taught in Leet, Storla, Christopher and Belford Schools. She then began 17 years at Mt. Vernon Public School teaching various classes but ended with her most favorite class, kindergarten. Florence was active as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, president of the South Dakota District Lutheran Daughters, Christian Women's Association, a Consulting Coordinator of Friendship Bible Coffee, an instructor for Crossroad Bible Institute Prison Ministry and many other church activities. In 2005 Florence became a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Florence and Martin farmed in Elliott and Blendon Townships. They lived on the farm Martin was born on until 1975. At that time they moved west of Mitchell, still in the country but closer to town. Florence retired in 1986. In 1993, Florence and Martin moved into Mitchell. Florence lost the love of her life in 1995. In 2004 she moved to Wesley Acres Retirement Complex. In 2010 Florence became a resident at Prairie Crossings Assisted Living and in 2011 she moved to Firesteel Healthcare Center. Florence is survived by her daughters, Naomi Uhre, Lexington, NE, Ruth (Lloyd) Reif and Lois (Dave) Swenson all of Mitchell; six grandchildren, Michael Zemina, Mitchell, SD, Tammy (Ross) Farr, Scott City, KS, Noela Swenson, Huron, SD, Arvene Nitsch, Lexington, NE, Ashley (Derek) Howard and Jenna (Adam) Hillman all of Mitchell, SD; seven grand grandchildren; and her baby sister, Elsie and brother in law, Howard Ayer, Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her parents; two sisters, Mildred and Eileen; a brother, Walter; and many other cherished family members and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Rural Letcher, SD.
