Obituary

Florence (Moir) Fristad, age 92, of Green Valley, AZ (formerly of Mitchell), died January 21, 2006 in Green Valley. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday February 4, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery with a lunch to follow. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel. Florence was born on March 10, 1913 in Hurley, South Dakota and moved to Mitchell with her parents as a teenager. Migrations, and at least one personal habit, evolved from various employment searches beginning during the Depression. For example, Florence became hopelessly addicted to ice cream after working in Mitchells ice cream plant as a teenager. After graduating in nursing from Weslyan and Methodist Hospital in Mitchell in 1936, she followed relatives to Washington state, where she worked at St. Lukes Hospital in Bellingham (1937) in general nursing with a subsequent specialty in polio, tuberculosis and public health nursing (1938 to 1973) in California. She married Francis Moir in 1935 in St. Lawrence, South Dakota, whose various jobs in telephone pole yards, welding (Washington), and farming (South Dakota) caused the family to move several times. Daughter Arline (1938) and son Ralph (1940) were born in Bellingham, Washington. Francis became part owner of the Mutual Plywood Company in Eureka, California (1947), where Florence and Francis lived for 26 years. In 1973, they retired to Mitchell, South Dakota. Francis died of cancer in 1976. In 1981, Florence married next-door neighbor, Richard Fristad, adding seven stepsons and daughters to the family. Richard also died of cancer in 1986. From 1997, Florence was in the care of her daughter Arline Moir Sisson and Robert Sisson, first in Denver, Colorado and most recently in Green Valley, Arizona, where she died on January 21, 2006. She loved to travel around the US and the world. Her hobbies included growing plants, playing cards, sewing, and playing the piano. Methodist church activities were an important part of her life. She very much enjoyed attending the Hershey and Fristad family reunions each year in Mitchell, South Dakota. She is survived by daughter, Arline Sisson (Robert), Green Valley, AZ; son, Ralph Moir (MaryAnn), Livermore, CA; and step-children: Joyce Peterson (Harold), Viborg, SD, Eugene Fristad, (Mary), Mt. Vernon, SD, Dorothy Lane, Sioux City, IA, Ilene Carpenter (Vern) Greeley, CO, Kalen Fristad (Darlene) Newton, IA and David Fristad (Nancy), Vivian, SD; one brother, Raymond Hershey (Dorothy), Albert Lea, MN, and two sisters, Hazel Wheeldon, Sioux Falls, and Irma Slocum. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Francis Moir and Richard Fristad, her parents and brother, Vail Hershey. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to a memorial in Florencess name to Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, South Dakota, 57301.
