Obituary

Fay Bitterman age 89, of Mitchell, died Sunday June 1, 2008 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Memorial service will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 5 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Fay Theresa Rodman Bittermann was born March 31, 1919 on a farm north of Hitchcock, S.D. Fay was the third in a family of five girls: Iola May- deceased Fern Bucholz deceased Margurite Mortimer deceased Evelyn Reintsma deceased Fay started school when she was 5 years old with a perfect attendance year. She graduated 12 years later after completing High School in the same school. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University for one year. She was active in music from a very young age. She began playing for church in Hitchcock when she had to pick out the hymns beforehand. She married Lee Hoffman in 1939. To this union 9 children were born: Dianna Fay deceased, David Lee, Dickie Dee, George Wesley, Jerry Newton, Beverly Jean, Bonnie Fay, Beatirce Belle, and Betty Ann. Lee passed away in October 1959. Fay worked at the S.D. Highway Dept. for 15 years. After retiring from the highway she worked 15 years at Singer Sewing Company. She spent many hours sewing for the family and many others. In 1977 Fay married Alton P. Bittermann. They spent 8 years in Arizona before settling down in Mitchell again. They settled at their home in Mitchell. At her death Fay was still sewing and quilting for others. Fay was preceeded in Death by her first husband, Lee Hoffman, four sisters, infant daughter Dianna Fay, her parents, her daughter-in-law Delores Hoffman, and an infant grandson. She is survived by her husband Alton P. Bittermann, 8 children and their spouses; David Hoffman, Mitchell, S.D.; Dick (Sally) Hoffman, LaPointe, WI.; George (Sue) Hoffman, Eagan, S.D.; Jerry (Carol) Hoffman, LaCrosse, WI.; Beverly (Paul) Thompson, Mitchell, S.D.; Bonnie (Charlie) Miller, Fort Dodge, IA.; Bea (Randy) Shultz, Spearfish, S.D.; Betty Ann (Randy) Schmitz, Boone, IA.; 25 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
