Evelyn Swedensky, age 102, of Letcher, SD, died October 1, 2014, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on October 11, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, with burial at the Butler Cemetery, Rural Letcher, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Ms. Swedensky was born August 19, 1912 in Letcher, SD. The daughter of Milton and Kate Swedensky, she graduated from Letcher High School and attended Northern State University for one year. While teaching rural school for several years she attended summer classes, earning her State Teaching Certificate and qualifying her to teach in town. She taught in Burbank, SD, Miles, IA, and in the elementary city schools of Aberdeen, SD, for seven years. During that time she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She was then hired to teach in the Minneapolis Public City Schools system, where she taught for over 23 years. Summers were spent tending to her home in Letcher. She was working toward her Master's degree at the time of her retirement in 1976. Ms. Swedensky belonged to a number of educational organizations during her teaching career, and after her retirement became a life member of the Mitchell Area Retired Teachers Association (MARTA). Survivors include nieces; Patricia Schmida Wahl, Beverly Schmida Vearrier, Sharon Schmida Murphy, Kae Schmida Pugh, Mary Ann Schmida Titus and nephews; Milton Schmida, Larry Schmida, Robert Schmida, and Stephen Schmida. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Esther Swedensky and Louise (Thomas) Schmida.
