Obituary

Evelyn M. Johnson, age 94, of Rapid City, SD (formerly of Storla, SD) died Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in New Underwood, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Storla Lutheran Church with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Letcher, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, SD. Evelyn Minnie (Hutton) Johnson was born on November 28, 1920 in Mitchell, SD to Roy and Lisa (Thompson) Hutton. She spent her early life near Storla, SD. She attended Thompson School for her elementary years and graduated from Letcher High School in 1938. She graduated with a teaching degree from Dakota Wesleyan University. Evelyn married Lyle A Johnson on June 7, 1941 in Waterloo, Iowa. She followed Lyle while he was in the Navy. In 1946 they settled on their farm near Storla where she lived until moving to Rapid City, SD in 2001. Evelyn taught school for 30 years, starting with several country schools in Aurora and Sanborn counties and finishing with 20 years at Plankinton. While on the farm she was as active member of the Storla Lutheran Church, holding various offices. She was also a 4-H Leader and assisted with numerous projects with the 4-H Club. In 2001, Evelyn moved to Rapid City, where she was active in the Canyon Lake and Minneluzahan Senior Citizen Centers. She was an associate member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church. As the years progressed she move into Echo Ridge Retirement Center where she had many friends and enjoyed a very active social life. Her last year was spent at the Good Samaritan Home in New Underwood. Evelyn always enjoyed gardening, canning and crafts, but she was best known for her beautiful flowers, both on the farm and in Rapid City. She is survived by her daughter, LoRayne (Ted) Whitehead, Rapid City, SD, and two sons, AlRoy (Jean) Johnson, Rapid City, SD; Loren (Jeanette) Johnson, Burbank, SD. Four grandchildren, Megan (Jesse) Rehberg and Blaze Johnson, Rapid City, SD; Travis Whitehead, Brookings, SD; and Janet Amundson, Vermillion, SD; Four great-grandchildren; Two sister-in-laws, Arlene Biehn and Gerri Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and twin brother and two brother-in-laws.
