Evelyn R. Evans age 74, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Lake Andes, SD.
Evelyn Rose Evans was born December 16, 1941 in Niobrara, NE to Frank and Elsie (Moticka) Wirth. She grew up on a farm by Lesterville, SD, attended country school for 8 years, attending Tabor High School for 2 years and Yankton High School for 2 years graduating in 1959 with high honors with a full academic scholarship to Northern State
College.
Evelyn was united in marriage to Stephen H. Evans on June 17, 1967 in Yankton, SD.
She received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Northern State College in Aderdeen, SD and received her Master's in Special Education from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD in 1994. During her teaching career she taught country school for 2 years. She then went on to teach elementary education in Wakonda, Sioux Falls, Yankton, Armour, Corsica. In 1990, Steve and Evelyn moved to Mitchell where she taught at Longfellow for 17 years. Evelyn was a member of the S.D. Education Association and the Mitchell Education Association.
Evelyn enjoyed embroidering and making baby blankets. She has given these blankets to over 100 family members and friends. Her greatest pleasures in life were receiving the Longfellow Elementary Teacher of the year in 2005, 17 years at Longfellow school in Mitchell and spending time with her grandchildren, she thoroughly loved every student she taught.
Grateful for sharing her life are her husband Stephen H. Evans of Mitchell, SD; sons Kevin H. (Lisa) Evans of Yankton, SD, Jason T. (Holly Jo) Evans of Madison, SD and Jerad F. (Holly Ann) Evans of Chamberlain, SD; sisters Janice (Larry) Novak of Verdigre, NE and Joann Berntson of Yankton, SD.; 8 grandchildren - Brandy, Curtis, Garret, Elijah, Parker, Jett, Hayden, and Kinsey; 3 great-grandchildren – Karli, Remington, Tobias; several nieces and nephews and 10 brother-in-law's and sister-in-law's.
She is preceded in death by her parents; grandparents and sister-in-law Jane Evans.
