Eugene Kracht, 78, of Mitchell, died Thursday at his home in Mitchell, SD of a heart attack. There will be a visitation at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell on Sunday from 4-7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, De Smet, SD, on Monday, at 2:00 PM Monday, November 22. Burial will be in the De Smet Cemetery. Gene was born November 15, 1926, in De Smet, to Walter and Martha (Bunker) Kracht. He graduated from De Smet high school and was then inducted into the US Army, serving from 1945-1946. While in the service in the Kansas City area, he met and married Margaret Stratemeier, December 11, 1947. They spent 27 years in De Smet where he worked for Rousar Plumbing, Nates Bottle Gas and time spent being self-employed as well as serving on the city council and volunteer fire department. They moved to Watertown in 1973, when he became employed with the US Postal Service. They spent 15 years there, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Watertown Lions and Elks. They moved to Mitchell in 1994, where they had a son and daughter living in the area. He is survived by his wife, sons, Steve and wife, Sherri, Mitchell; Rod and wife, Kerry, Denver, CO; Les and wife, Bev, Houston, TX; and a daughter, Missy (Margene) Krull, Armour, SD, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Loretta Nicholson, De Smet. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.
