Eugene E Hoyt, 81, White Lake, formerly of Mitchell, SD, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at Aurora/Brule Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial in the American Legion Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel. Eugene E. Hoyt, son of Homer and Jean (Munger) Hoyt, was born March 21, 1927 in Pukwana, SD. He grew up and attended elementary and high school in Mitchell, SD where he graduated in the spring 1945. He entered the US Army on July 24, 1945 and served in Germany with Company E 252nd Engineering C Battalion. In Germany his division was instrumental in the cleanup of Berlin after WWII. He returned home on furlough to Mitchell and married Bette Jean (Henzlik) on December 18, 1945 and was Honorably Discharged on January 12, 1947. Upon returning home he helped his father-in-law Frank farm and eventually bought his own farming operation west of Mitchell, where he and wife Bette, farmed and raised a family until he retired in 1985. During his many years on the farm he enjoyed family and friends, bowling, playing cards with neighbors. His love of horses kept him going during the years of retirement. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers and later resided at Aurora/Brule Nursing Home until the time of his death. He was a member of American Legion, VFW and various other organizations. Grateful for having shared his life are his four children, Greg, Sioux Falls, SD; Gary and wife Roxanne, Poway, CA; Marilyn Odland and husband Lynn, Mitchell, SD; Glen and wife Nancy, Mansfield, TX; one sister Ilo Mooney, Little Rock, AR; nine grandchildren, Michelle Hoyt, Sioux Falls, SD; Daniel Hoyt, Omaha, NE; Trisha Lamouree, Santee, CA; Heather Hoyt, Escondido, CA; Nichole Johnson, Madison, SD; Jonathon Odland, Mitchell, SD; Alicia Odland, Mitchell, SD, Zachary Hoyt, Mansfield, TX; Dominic Hoyt, Mansfield, TX, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Bette, his parents, three sisters and three brothers-in-law.
