Obituary

Esther Miller, age 95, of Mitchell, died July 7, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery. Esther was born on September 1, 1909, in Brule County, SD to Decker and Katherine (Kuchera) Craft. She attended school in Brule County and graduated from Kimball High School in 1927. She attended Notre Dame Junior College for one year and taught all grades in country schools near Bonesteel and Kimball. She married Fred Miller in 1938 in Mitchell. The family lived on various farms north of Mitchell after their marriage, before moving to Mitchell in 1954. She worked at the Siesta and Miller Motels for many years. She was also one of the original Pink Ladies at St. Joseph Hospital, volunteering for over 15 years. She later volunteered at Litchfield School for several years. For the last few years, Esther made her home at Prairie Crossings and more recently at Avera Brady Home. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to crochet, sew and knit, and made monkeys for the hospital. She did a lot of volunteer work. She is survived by her son, Richard, of Mitchell, nieces and nephews: Tom (Roberta) McEntee, Tim (Dee) McEntee, Bob (Molly) Barker, Bill Barker, Cindy (Tom) Guffin, Kathy (Darwyn) Sawvell, Jacque (Ron) Snedeker, and Sandy (Rich) Siegenthaler and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1965, and two sisters, Ella McEntee and Helen Barker.
