Obituary

Ernestine Pope, age 88, of Mitchell died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery. Ernestine Pope was born November 2, 1918, to John and Karolina (Streyle) Fuerst at Armour, SD. She attended country school near Armour and later attended National Business School at Sioux City, Iowa taking classes in Typing and Business Management. She married J. K. Pope on October 18, 1938 in Mitchell. They resided in Sioux City, Iowa and were divorced in 1953. Ernestine worked as a model of hats and hair accessories for Aldens Catalog in Albuquerque, NM from 1949 to 1951 and as a file clerk prior to that for Western Union Telegraph Company in Washington, DC. Ernestine worked for Younkers Department Store for several years, and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a cashier at the Nicollet Hotel. In 1962, she moved to Tripp, SD to care for her mother. She moved to Mitchell, in 1969, and worked for the federal government until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Rebecca Lodge where she served as vice president and Noble Grand for two years. She also belonged to Degree of Honor Lodge 26, serving as president and holding many other offices. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Deborah Circle. Ernestine resided at Tender Heart Assisted Living in Mitchell from 1999 to 2007 when she moved to the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake in February, 2007. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Pauline, Hilda and Adeline, and four brothers, Gideon, Leo, Thaeful, and Helmuth.
