Ernest Lockwood, 86, of Mitchell, died February 25, at Sunset Manor, in Irene, SD. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday at Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday at Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Ernest was born January 31, 1920 in Vermillion, SD to John H. and Pauline (Hundley) Lockwood. He attended a country school near Vermillion. He farmed near Akron, Iowa. Ernest married Irene Cassens on August 5, 1941 at South Sioux City, Nebraska. He drove a gas truck from 1949-1951 and then became a bus driver for Inter City Bus lines in 1951, while living in Yankton. They moved to Mitchell in 1953 and he continued driving a bus. He retired from Jack Rabbit Bus Lines in 1985. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball, fishing, feeding and watering horses, horseracing and talking. His greatest enjoyment were his grandchildren, his numerous nephews and nieces, and his dog Duke. He is survived by his wife, Irene, of Mitchell; his daughter, Betty and husband, Ralph Boone, of Mitchell, and son, Richard Lockwood and wife, Cheryl, of Sallisaw, OK; five grandchildren: Troy Carling, Doug Carling, Travis Lockwood, Teresa (Lockwood) Balster and Lee Lockwood; six great grandchildren: Cheyanne and Dillan Balster, Morgan, Austin and Landon Lockwood, and Jordyn Carling; three step grandchildren: Michele Dressen, and Robin and Randall Boone; two step great grandchildren: Kyle Nickeson and Angela Boone Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Lockwood, a great granddaughter, Taylor Lockwood and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Darlene and Darrell Plueger.
