Obituary

Emma E. Noble age 93, of Mitchell died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Emma Elizabeth Noble, daughter of Harold and Sofia (Pedersen) Frederiksen, was born October 15, 1921 in rural Howard, SD. She attended country school thru the eighth grade and later graduated from Howard High School at the age of 16. After the unexpected death of her mother in 1938, Emma took care of household chores for her father and brother Magnus until her marriage to William Boyd Maley in March of 1940. Emma and her sons Bill and Darrel rode the Zephier Train to Santa Monica, CA in 1944. While in California she worked at the Douglas Plant building airplanes for the war. She was so tiny that she crawled thru the opening in the wings to rivet the aluminum, an original "Rosie the Rivetor." She was divorced from Boyd, and was married to Donald Noble Sr. in February 26, 1945. To this union three children Donald, Floyd and Mary were born. The couple farmed in the Letcher and Artesian area, until moving to Mitchell in 1957. Emma worked the mid night shift at South Side Texace for 3 ½ years as a short order cook and waitress having her skills from supplying meals to threshing crews. Emma began as a cook at Woolworth's cafeteria in 1961. She retired from the store after 26 ½ years in March 1987. Upon retirement she became active in the American Legion where she managed the Bingo until she had a stroke in 1998. Emma enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening, bird watching, stewardship, caring for stray animals, going to casinos and traveling. Her travels included the DC area where she enjoyed the memorials. She visited Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Mt. St. Helen, San Francisco, Dixon, CA, Washington DC, Richmond, VA, Las Vegas, NV. Highlights of her travels were her first trip to the Black Hills and a cross country trip to San Francisco with her daughter Mary and grandson Eric. She spent many evenings playing chess, having been taught by her parents. Emma was a member of the American Legion, DAV and VFW Auxiliaries. Grateful for having shared her life are her childen, William (Dianne) Maley, Brush Prairie, WA, Darrel Maley, Las Vegas, NV, Donald (Cherrie) Noble Jr., Mitchell, SD, Floyd (Sandra) Noble, Plankinton, SD, Mary Ann (Robert) Smith, Winchester, VA; 19 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 16 great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her both her husbands; her parents; a brother, Magnus; a sister, Julia; a grandson, Michael Noble; a granddaughter, Dee Ann Maley; a daughter-in-law, Mona; and a brother-in-law, Joe. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Emma's name.
