Obituary

Eldon Wayne "Stub" Johnson, age 87, of Mitchell, SD died Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Home in Corsica, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, May 23, 2015 at New Home Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial and military rites at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Eldon Wayne "Stub" Johnson, son of Rick and Erma (Larson) Johnson, was born December 2, 1927 in Mitchell, SD. He attended grade school in Davison County and later graduated from Mitchell High School in 1946. After he completed his schooling, Stub began farming with his family. Stub entered the US Army on January 31, 1951 and served in Germany, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 16, 1953 and returned to the family farm. He was united in marriage with LaVonne Degen on November 27, 1955 in Mitchell, SD. The couple farmed the family farm until 1986. They then together managed motels in the Midwest for 12 years. After leaving the motel business, Stub then drove for the United Blood Center in Mitchell. Stub enjoyed life, pulling practical jokes, watching his children and grandchildren in all their activities, hunting with family, showing his Big Brown Cows at the State Fair and working in his wood shop. He loved a good game of golf and his buddy, Spike. Grateful for having share his life are his wife of 59 years, LaVonne Johnson, Mitchell, SD; their five children, Becky (Rod) Muhs, Mt. Vernon, SD, Kevin Johnson, LaCrescent, MN, Neal Johnson and his friend, Kim Benson, Mitchell, SD, Lance (Linda) Johnson, Castle Rock, CO, Dawn (Bob) Sechena, Great Falls, MT; 14 grandchildren, Stephanie (Ben) Dietz, Marcus, Alan (Christina), Brandon Muhs, Bridgitte, Chaz (April), Chelsea, Cole, Lysette, Lynnae Johnson, Madisen, Dakota, Shelby and Max Sechena; two great grandchildren, Tyler and Grace Dietz; a sister, Caroline (John) Adair, Winnipeg, Canada; four sisters-in-law, Phyllis Gossel and Donna Myers, both of Mitchell, SD, LaVae Dunn, Rapid City, SD, Anita Degen, Alexandria, SD; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four children in infancy; his in-laws, John and Elizabeth Degen; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Stanley (Marge) Johnson, four brothers-in-law, Clifford Gossel, Richard Myers, Richard Dunn and Adrian Degen.
