Edwin Lee Sigmund was born on June 20, 1949 in Mitchell, SD to Celestine Hohn. When he was nearly 3 years old his mother suddenly passed away and he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Caroline and Leonard Sigmund of rural Plankinton, SD. He was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon. Edwin graduated 8th grade from Hopper Consolidated School in rural Aurora County in 1963 and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1967. On February 26, 1971 he married Vickie Kroupa at Salem Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon. To this union were born two children, Michelle Lea and Brandon Lenard. Over the years Ed held a variety of occupations including working at UBC, Electronic Supply, Farmer's Elevator in Mt. Vernon, Lakeside Dairy, Havens and Burr 66, Lakota Tire Sales, Boehnen Farms, a landscaping company in Denver, CO. and Wieczorek Harvesting. From 1981-1987 he operated his own semi-tractor and trailer, and hay farmed with his dad. In 1987 he went to work for Upper Midwest and then drove semi for several companies. From 1991-2001 he worked for National Food Corp. in Plankinton and United Blood Services and continued farming. From 2001-2003 he drove bus for Palace Transit until he suffered a severe stroke in January of 2003 which forced his retirement. With the help of his friends and family he was able to continue his love of farming until his death. Ed loved almost every sport, playing basketball, baseball and bowling for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman until he had his first stroke. He always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Ed is survived by his wife of 40 years, Vickie of Mt. Vernon, his daughter Michelle and husband Shannon Klumb and their children, Kendra, Kaden and Kody of Ethan, his son Brandon and wife Melissa (Snyder) and their children, Phoenix and Madison of Mitchell; a sister Sharon and husband Dick Kretchmer of Custer and mother-in-law Delores Kroupa of Mitchell; brother-in-law Dale Kroupa, sister-in-law Elaine and husband Jay Duvall all of Mt. Vernon; 6 nieces and 1 nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother; his adoptive parents; father-in-law Ralph Kroupa.
