Obituary

Edwin R. Kaufman, age 94 (formerly of Mitchell) passed away January 14, 2013 at Golden Living Covington Heights in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Delmont, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Edwin R. Kaufman the son of Frank and Emma (Schwartz) Kaufman was born October 12, 1918 in Freeman, SD. At the age of 3 he moved with his family to a farm near Delmont, SD and attended country school and graduated from Delmont High School in 1939. After high school Ed enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was stationed in Dallas, TX and Scott Field in Illinois where he graduated from radio communications school in 1942. He then served 28 months as a radio operator in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska where he received a Certificate of Commendable Service. He also received a Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star during his service. Ed was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945. As a member of the VFW, Ed was recognized in 2009 for his efforts to preserve the rights and entitlements earned by America's veterans. Ed graduated from Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD in 1941 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD in 1949. He received his teaching certification in 1954 and a Master of Science in Education from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD in 1955. He went on to teaching in Minnesota and 33 years of service at the Granada Huntley Public School in Granada, MN. During his time as a teacher he also used his photography skills to produce the annual yearbook for many years. He retired from teaching in June of 1983 and moved back to Mitchell, SD. Ed was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. He enjoyed travel, bowling and photography. As a member of the Mitchell Camera Club his photos frequently won in competition and were published in The Mitchell Daily Republic newspaper. Ed enjoyed visiting his brothers and sisters and spending time with his many nieces and nephews over the years. His smile, the twinkle in his eye and his great sense of humor and whimsy will be missed by his family and his many friends. Ed was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters and is survived by one sister in law, Elsie Kaufman of Sioux Falls, SD and his many nieces and nephews.
