Edwin Donald Herman, age 79, of Mitchell, SD died October 28, 2007 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Private family services were held Thursday at Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Edwin Donald Herman, son of Christian and Regina (Kost) Herman, was born November 18, 1927 on the family farm in rural Parkston, SD. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After his schooling he continued to help on the family farm. Edwin entered the US Army on May 16, 1951 and served in Anchorage, AK. He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1953 and returned to the family farm. Edwin was united in marriage with Joan Schoenfelder on October 26, 1953 at Emsley Church in rural Ethan, SD. The couple lived on a farm south of Mitchell, SD. In 1955 they moved into Mitchell, where Edwin was employed at various gas stations in Mitchell. In 1956 he established Eddies Mobil on the corner of Sanborn and Havens. He continued with the station until 1976. Edwin then was employed for a short time at Syncom and then later with the US Post Office. He retired from the US Post Office at the age of 62. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the American Legion. Edwin was a supporter of the DWU Tiger Basketball Team and a member of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball, bowling and pinochle. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joan Herman, Mitchell, SD; three children, Joyce (David) McGee, Mitchell, SD, Robert E. (Lori) Herman, Mitchell, SD, Lisa (Doug) Oelrich, Watertown, SD; four grandchildren, Matthew (Elizabeth) McGee, Mitchell, SD, Kiirsttnae (Beau) Kummer, Spearfish, SD, Corttnee Herman, Mitchell, SD, Kelly Oelrich, Watertown, SD; two great grandchildren, Jace and Ayden; a sister, Lorraine Jung, Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and two sisters.
