Obituary

Edith Thompson, age 78, of Woonsocket, formerly of Mitchell, died October 20, 2006 at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 28, at the Servicemens Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell with full military rites. A luncheon will follow at the Will Funeral Chapel. All are welcome at both. Edith was born on July 3, 1928 in Mitchell, South Dakota. She was the 10th child out of fifteen children born to Clyde and Hazel (Beedle) Thompson. Edith also has a twin sister, Ardith. They were one set of four sets of twins born to Clyde and Hazel. She was an excellent softball player and was named allstate for Mitchell high. She joined the Womens Army Corp in 1954 and traveled the world for the military. Some of her duty stations were in Japan, Germany, Alaska and the Pentagon. She continued to play competitive softball for the Army. She retired from the Army in 1974 at the rank of E8, Master Sergeant. Edith moved back to the Mitchell area after her retirement from the military. She spent her summers at Twin Lakes near Woonsocket and traveled to Laughlin, Nevada during the winters. She is survived by her sisters: Barbara Regan, Ardith DeJong (her twin), Dorothy Strand; brothers: Harold, William, Charles, Gerold, Jerold and George; brother-in-law, Dale Strand; sisters-in-law, Jean, Evelyn, Heidi and Patty and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: James, Willis, Frederick, Howard and Richard; brothers-in-law, Burt Regan and Alvin DeJong; sisters-in-law, LaVonne, Cecelia, Joyce and Eldonna. The family request no flowers and that memorials will be directed to the American Legion and the Retarded Childrens Association.
