Obituary

Dwight D. Deter, age 72, of Mitchell, died December 4, 2005 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:00 PM Thursday. Burial will be in Servicemens Memorial Cemetery with full military rites. Dwight was born May 3, 1933 at Mitchell, SD to George and Frieda (Gherts) Deter. He grew up and attended school in Mitchell. He served in the National Guard in 1954 and 1955. He served in the US Army from 1955-1957 and was stationed in Germany. After the service, he made his home in Spearfish and attended college there. He served as a SD Game Warden in the Spearfish area and also had a pilots license. He returned to Mitchell in the late 1960s and started at the US Post Office where he worked as a rural mail carrier for 21 years until his retirement on December 3, 1993. After his retirement he worked part time at Fisher Sand and Gravel. He was a philatelist. He loved to work outside and had many cats for pets. He had coffee every Sunday morning with his friends. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Union. Dwight is survived by his his brother, Charles William Deter and his wife, Susan, Sun City West, Arizona; three nephews, Scott Deter and his wife, Margaret, Naperville, IL, Dan Deter and his wife, Alison and their children, Ali and Brent, Fox Point, WI, Reverend David Deter and his wife, Amanda and their children, Katie, Ben and Jack, Fairfield, AL; his children: Tamara Totton, Letcher; Kimberly Creekmer and husband, LeRoy, Burke; Wanda Jennings and husband, Lawrence, Mitchell; Lanita Gregerson and husband, Lynn, Delmont; and Joey Totton and fiance Richard Hoffmann, Burke; ten grandchildren, one great grandchild; and a special friend, Karen Totton, of Letcher. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Glenn, in 1986.
