Duane L. Smith, age 96, of Mitchell, died December 5, 2006 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the Will Funeral Chapel with visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery with Masonic rites. Duane was born on August 1, 1910 at Loomis, SD to Francis and Retta (Pruner) Smith. He attended school in Loomis and at the age of twelve, moved to Mitchell. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1928. His first wife, Esther, preceded him in death and on December 16, 1967, he married Leota Hopkins in Canyon Park, CA. Duane was in the oil business and farming in and around Mitchell. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and a lifetime member of the Elks. He is survived by his wife, Leota; one daughter, Sondra Francis and husband, Warren, Grass Valley, CA; two grandchildren, Garvin Francis, Nevada City, CA and Lisa Francis, San Francisco, CA; four nephews, Robert Riley, Jerry Hunter, Dennis Boslaugh, Gary Hunter; and one niece, Donna Zanutto. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Esther and a sister, Viola Nemmo.
