Duane Alvin Nygaard, age 79 of Sioux Falls, SD (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the Will Funeral Chapel with internment at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Thursday August 12, 2021 at the Will Funeral Chapel.

Duane Alvin, Nygaard, son of Alvin and Helen (Gartzke) Nygaard, was born October 3, 1941 in Watertown, SD. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1959. After his schooling Duane worked with his parents in their family-owned Feed and Hatchery Store. He served in the US Army from 1964 to 1965 as a radio tech stationed in France.

He was united in marriage with Jackie Abley on August 12, 1966 in Watertown, SD. Duane graduated from Watertown Tech with a degree as a telephone lineman. The couple lived in Mitchell for many years and were avid fans of the Mitchell Kernels and the DWU Tigers. He worked for and retired from Century Link in 2002. Jackie passed away in August of 2004.

Duane was then united in marriage with Dorothy (Reiner) Thaler on January 6, 2017 in Mitchell, SD. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 2019.

He enjoyed going for walks and especially watching his grandchildren and step grandchildren play baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. Duane was always ready to help friends and neighbors.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge in Mitchell, SD.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy Nygaard, Sioux Falls, SD; his children, Lynn (Lance) Bauske, Valley Springs and Kris (Rubes) Schmidt, Mitchell, SD; step children, April Rapoport, Sioux Falls, SD and Jeffery (Nancy) Thaler, Groton, SD; grandchildren, Logan (Faith) Bauske, Sioux Falls, SD and Luke (Sarah his fiancé) Bauske, N. Augusta, SC; step grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Joos, Fargo, ND, Conner Thaler, Groton, SD, Alyssa Thaler, Groton; great grandchildren, Sophia Bauske and Nathan Joos; a sister, Barb Nygaard, Minneapolis, MN and a sister-in-law, Linda Nygaard, Rapid City, SD.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie; his parents; a brother, Richard (Dick); and his step mother, Rachel Lafrenz.
