Obituary

Duane Northrup, age 73, of Letcher, died Sunday May 23, 2010 at Sanford Hospice Centennial Cottage in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday at the Letcher Community Church in Letcher with burial in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Duane was born on June 15, 1936 at home in rural Butler Township near Letcher to Joseph and Dakota (Alexander) Northrup. He attended grade school for two years at the Hinders School and 6 years at the Stekl School. Badger Clark spoke at his 8th grade graduation in Woonsocket. He graduated from Letcher High School in 1954. Following graduation, he pursued his long time 4-H project of raising and selling registered Hampshire hogs. He volunteered for the draft and served in the Army from April 1955 to April 1957. Upon returning from the service, he continued to raise and show hogs. He farmed with his dad and they expanded the cattle operation.

He was united in marriage with Janice Johnson on April 7, 1958 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Letcher. He and his wife attended and camped at the South Dakota State Fair for over 50 years. He was an avid supporter of the 4-H and enjoyed assisting his daughters with their cattle and hog projects. He was a lifetime member of the Letcher Community Church (formerly Letcher U.C.C. Church) and held many offices. He also served as secretary on the Farmers Coop Association (Cenex) of Mitchell, Alexandria, Ethan, and Storla board from 1984-2002. He retired from farming in 2002 due to health reasons.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife Janice; three daughters: Dawn Nebelsick (Larry), Canistota, SD; Renee May (Dan), Harford, SD; and T.J. Hansen (John), Fargo, ND. 4 granddaughters: Candice Nebelsick, Bloomington, MN; Megan Broderson (Kyle), Buffalo, WY; Keri Nebelsick, Chicago, IL; and Kelsie Nebelsick, Canistota, SD. 1 great-grandson Kayl Broderson. 1 brother Marvin Northrup (Joan), Mitchell, SD; and 1 sister Norma Moe (Robert), Alexandria, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials will be directed to: Letcher Community Church, SD Honor Flight, Sanborn Co. Cancer Society, and Sanborn Co. 4-H
